Not funny, Mr. President

Pollution joke by George Bush doesn’t go over well at environmental summit

Responding with all the class and eloquence that has typified his nearly eight years as president of the United States, George W. Bush reportedly went above and beyond his usual candor while recently exiting the G8 summit.

“Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter,” were his parting words according to the London Telegraph. Bush was leaving a private meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, both of whom appeared stunned by the leader of … yes, the world’s largest environmental polluter.

He and the other leaders had been discussing reducing carbon emissions. Considering Bush’s continued resistance to stemming global warming, the ill-timed joke has been taken as a slap in the face by many in the international environmental community.
