It’s not news: Major network picks up a great show, fails to promote it, shuffles its timeslots, and the show dies a slow death. This time, it happened to a show that featured some of the best comedic writing since The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the best ensemble cast since M*A*S*H. News Radio only managed to hang on for five short seasons, but at least we can continue to relive the wacky hi-jinks of the WNYX news radio crew—beleaguered station manager Dave Nelson (Dave Foley), insufferable announcer Bill McNeal (Phil Hartman), office spaz Matthew Brock (Andy Dick) and the rest of the gang—thanks to this boxed set of the show’s first two seasons. The two discs are also loaded with special features, including a gag reel, a making-of featurette, and commentary on 20 of the 29 episodes, including an interview with former NBC chief Warren Littlefield who, too late, realized the error of his ways with this classic comedy.
