Nerd alert!
Star Wars fans and stamp collectors—a double whammy if you’re both!—will get a treat in May, with the release of the Star Wars 41-cent stamps. Yes, we typed that correctly. The price of sending snail mail (does anyone do that anymore anyway?) is going up that month, too. The 15-stamp sheet will come in the form of a movie poster and the U.S. Postal Service is even going to let people vote for their favorites, which will appear on a collage stamp to be released later. In addition to seeing Luke, Leia, Chewy and the Millenium Falcon on an envelope near you, here are some non-Star Wars stamps to look forward to this summer and fall:
Wedding hearts: ’Tis the season.
Pollination: Bees!
James Stewart: Gotta love him.
Marvel superheroes: More nerd fun.
Jury duty: Ooh. Don’t get us too excited.
Mendez vs. Westminster School District: Now they’re just grabbing at straws.
In case you were wondering (we were), the USPS has compiled a list of the 25 most popular commemorative stamps ever. Here are the top five:
Stamp | Year | Number saved |
---|---|---|
Elvis | 1993 | 124 million |
Wonders of America | 2006 | 87 million |
Wildflowers | 1992 | 76 million |
Rock ‘n’ Roll/R&B | 1993 | 75.8 million |
DC Comics superheroes | 2006 | 57 million |
