Megamind
DreamWorks’ latest animated family flick turns funny-man Will Ferrell into evil-alien Megamind. After finally killing his childhood rival—the heroically suave Metroman (a perfectly cast Brad Pitt)—Megamind realizes that life’s no fun without a little competition to keep him on his villainous toes. Wanting to restore the “good versus evil” balance, a disguised Megamind trains unsuspecting nerd Hal (Jonah Hill) into becoming his latest heroic nemesis. Then, when Megamind starts crushing on good-willed Roxy (Tina Fey), he (surprise!) realizes that being good ain’t so bad. Somewhere along the way, the film’s well-intentioned moral gets lost in a sea of over-complicated subplots, especially considering the target audience is about 10 years old. Luckily, the film doesn’t completely drown. With a few epically comedic moments of action-based fight scenes, kids will enjoy the film’s take on the super-hero journey. For parents, Megamind’s nod to the original 1978 Superman via a Marlon-Brando-like father-figure will temporarily entertain, but appreciate those laughs, because you’ll need patience for the remaining 90 minutes.
