Kryponite for Superferry

Protesting the environmental impacts of a new inter-island ferry service, swimmers and surfers in the ocean waters off Nawiliwili Harbor on Kauai successfully re-routed the huge vessel that had been destined to dock there last Monday (Aug. 27).

The next day, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle canceled another of the Superferry‘s scheduled trips between Honolulu and Kauai, fearing for the safety of the protesters, a dozen of whom had formed a human blockade in the water.

On shore, several hundred people protested the arrival of the boat, one of two giant vessels built to carry about 850 passengers and nearly 300 cars between the islands. The move came just a week after the Hawaii Supreme Court had ruled the state needed to conduct an environmental assessment of the ferry’s effects on the harbor.
