Judge Darrell Stevens
We were saddened to learn that retired Judge Darrell Stevens died Tuesday (March 18) at the age of 70, succumbing to a heart attack while playing golf.
Not only was Stevens one of the most progressive judges in the North State, he was a genuinely good guy, decent and kind. And his creative work in establishing the county’s Drug Court—one of the first in the nation and a model for similar courts elsewhere—saved hundreds of lives by giving drug abusers a path toward sobriety.
He went on to start similar treatment courts for domestic violence, mental illness and repeat drunk driving—also models for other counties. He left a lasting legacy of compassion and fairness.
Our condolences to his family.
