Former major league slugger and Madonna beau Jose Canseco held a press conference Monday (July 3) at Nettleton Stadium. Canseco recently signed with the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the Golden Baseball League and made his debut against the Chico Outlaws later in the evening. The former American League MVP and Rookie of the Year admitted his signing was driven, at least in part, by a desire to promote the upcoming film version of his controversial book, Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant ‘Roids, Smash Hits and How Baseball Got Big, which Canseco implied will send shockwaves larger than Barry Bonds’ neck through Major League Baseball and beyond. He struck out three times in the Surf Dawgs’ 4-3 victory—but he also hit a home run, bagging ample TV coverage and front-page stories throughout Northern California.
