Get Born
This four-piece from Melbourne (all the good rock bands are coming from overseas these days) is falling into heavy rotation on MTV, MTV2 and radio stations (local 92.7 for one), but for once it’s certainly well-deserved. Get Born has spawned the catchiest new-rock single, “Are You Gonna Be My Girl,” since the White Stripes’ “Fell in Love with a Girl.” Tracks such as “Get Me Outta Here” and “Last Chance” are obviously an homage to a huge Rolling Stones influence (circa mid-1960s), with singer Cameron Muncey growling the choruses in a raw, emotive Aussie accent that almost exactly mimics Mick Jagger’s English one. “Look What You’ve Done” sounds so much like a Beatles song—complete with beautiful piano interludes and an almost angelic use of simple overdriven guitar and bass—it’s hard to believe it was written decades later. Watch out.
