Jail inmate dies in custody

A Butte County Jail inmate died April 19 of a massive heart attack while in custody, jail officials reported.

The jail’s comprehensive press release on the incident describes inmate Vincent Ramirez as a 66-year-old Native American from Chico. He was arrested on April 8 on two charges of child molestation and was in jail awaiting sentencing.

He never got one. At about 8:20 in the evening of April 19, after a shower, Ramirez collapsed on the way back to his cell. He was given CPR by several correctional officers, but he never regained a pulse. He was pronounced dead at 9:13 at Oroville Hospital.

Ramirez, jail personnel announced, had suffered from health problems for some time and had received treatment at the jail and at Oroville Hospital when he was in custody before.

An autopsy determined that the cause of his death was a heart attack.
