Interim sheriff, here he comes
Supervisors vote to appoint Capt. Jerry Smith to top spot at December meeting
Sheriff’s Capt. Jerry Smith, who’s been with the department more than 30 years, will be appointed interim sheriff when Perry Reniff steps down Dec. 30, according to the Enterprise-Record.
The Board of Supervisors unanimously agreed to a motion of intent to name Smith to the post at its next meeting, which will be in December. This came after both Reniff and District Attorney Mike Ramsey spoke to Smith’s strengths, recommending him for the position.
Reniff, who has served as sheriff and coroner since 2002, announced his retirement last month, saying his hypertension wouldn’t allow him to fulfill his current term, which expires in January 2011.
