Hooker Oak charter school?

Parent Advisory Board looks into the option of leaving the district

It’s looking that way, at least based on the fact that the school’s Parent Advisory Board created a Charter School Committee in June and has been gathering information since then. Hooker Oak Elementary serves grades K-8 and is Chico Unified School District’s only open-structure option.

The group met Monday night at the Rose Scott Open Structure School (for more information on this new private school, see “New school") to discuss progress, Shellie Gregoire, the board’s co-moderator, told the CN&R.

“We’re planning to bring it before the whole parent group Sept. 22,” she said, at which time all parents can voice their opinions on whether the committee should go forward and draft a charter. If the majority agrees with the idea, Gregoire (pictured) said they hope to apply for funding in November and have the charter open by next fall.

Because the Rose Scott model is similar to that of Hooker Oak, there is a possibility that the two schools could merge, eliminating the “private school” label from Rose Scott, along with the tuition bill. That will be up for discussion if and when the charter option is approved.
