Homeless vets get a hand
Prop 41 directs funding toward housing for impoverished veterans
California voters directed funding toward providing housing for homeless and impoverished veterans by passing Proposition 41.
Under the Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014, which passed during Tuesday’s primary election with 65 percent of the vote, the state will sell $600 million in new general-obligation bonds to fund the construction, renovation and acquisition of affordable multifamily housing for homeless and low-income veterans, according to California Public News Service. It’s the first bond act to direct funding to such a cause; previous measures have focused on programs to help veterans buy houses.
California has roughly 15,000 homeless veterans—the most in the nation—and nearly half of them live in Los Angeles County.
