Hitting the disc-golf target

Caper Acres site is a good one, but so is the airport

It’s beginning to appear that, before too long, people will be playing disc golf at a site in Lower Park near Caper Acres. On Monday night (March 30), members of the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission voted unanimously to recommend that site to the City Council for a short course.

It’s not perfect—it may be too small for a full 18 holes—but it’s certainly good enough for a beginner course. The area isn’t being used at present, and, as several commissioners mentioned, it would benefit from clearing out the undergrowth, which is overrun by invasive species. And, perhaps most valuable, it’s easily accessible by foot, bicycle or car.

We applaud the commission for making a good choice and encourage the council to uphold it.

Commissioners also expressed considerable interest in a site just north of the airport, near the Westside Little League fields. It’s larger and has more varied terrain, though it lacks natural obstacles such as trees. In the longer term, the city might want to look at developing this site for a more challenging, 18-hole course. That would not only give golfers more choices, but also lessen pressure on the environmentally sensitive Upper Park course.

Are we beginning to see the light at the end of this absurdly long disc-golf tunnel? We sure hope so.
