Gruendl to tie knot
Marriage to longtime partner has political element: ‘to put human face on Prop 8’
Chico City Councilman Scott Gruendl is getting married Saturday (Sept. 20), and while this is clearly a moment of personal significance, there’s a political overtone as well.
Gruendl is tying the knot with his partner of 14 years, Nicholas Goodey, shown with him on the left in this 2007 photo. Their relationship has been public since Gruendl became mayor during his first council term, and he sees the wedding as “an opportunity to put a personal face on Prop 8”—the Nov. 4 ballot measure to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.
The ceremony itself would have been really politicized, Gruendl said, if San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom didn’t have a scheduling conflict preventing him from presiding Sunday evening.
