Group calls for impeachment

Hoping for a snowball effect, the directors of the Chico Peace and Justice Center announced Monday (Dec. 3) that they had voted unanimously Nov. 12 to urge Congress to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Citing a litany of charges, from lying about weapons of mass destruction, unconstitutional detention and treatment of prisoners and spying on U.S. citizens to threatening war on Iran, the center charges that the two men “have violated their constitutional responsibilities to the people” and should be impeached.

In a two-page position paper posted on the center’s Web site (www.chico-peace.org), the group calls on “others who share our conviction to make public their position as well. … Whether successful or not, impeachment proceedings would be healthy for our democracy.”

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a Democratic candidate for president, has introduced impeachment articles against Cheney in the House, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said all along that impeachment is “off the table.”
