Waste Management recognized for sustainability

Houston-based Waste Management’s North Valley Disposal branch in Chico has received certification recognizing it as a sustainable business.

The Business Environmental Resource Center recently certified the Chico location through its Sacramento Area Sustainable Business program, according to a press release. The program highlights and promotes businesses implementing practices from six eco-conscious categories: energy conservation, water conservation, pollution prevention, solid-waste reduction, green building, and transportation and air quality. To qualify for certification, businesses have to adopt at least 10 policies or regulations from a particular category.

North Valley Disposal implemented recommendations from PG&E and California Water Service Co.’s Water Wise auditing group, and posted signage throughout the facility promoting sustainable practices. The only certification the company failed to gain was in the green-building category, a shortcoming it plans to remedy with new building projects.
