Chico Unified approves Chico Green School’s charter

Organizers of Chico’s first sustainability-themed high school began celebrating a victory last week, when the Chico Unified School District’s Board of Trustees approved the charter for the proposed Chico Green School.

Kent Sandoe, a Chico State professor who also chairs the school’s overseeing nonprofit organization, said the board approved the charter in a unanimous vote “subject to minor revisions in some of the wording” during a special meeting on Wednesday (Oct. 14).

“Because of the unanimous vote, there’s no question it has been approved,” Sandoe said. “We don’t have to go back to the board [with the revisions], just to [CUSD] staff to check that the revisions have been made.”

Chico Green School is scheduled to open in fall 2010 as Chico’s first charter high school. The next step for the school’s organizers, Sandoe said, is the process of becoming accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges).
