Sometime between now and October, Chico’s branch of the Butte County Library will be open seven days a week. Biggs and Durham will be doubling their hours.

The added service times come by way of a $194,914 increase in library funding from the Board of Supervisors, which approved it unanimously. About 100 community members attended the public budget hearings in support of the libraries.

“It was definitely a wonderful surprise,” said Derek Wolfgram (pictured), Butte County Library director. The almost $200,000 comes on top of the $2.8 million already approved. “I’m very grateful for the community’s support—and to the Board of Supervisors for giving the library the opportunity to serve the community better.”

The first item of business will be to finalize the new hours for all six branches—they will be announced in mid-July. Gridley will also hire a new, well-qualified librarian.
