Fee frustration

Chico State students protest $190 increase in fees per semester.

Chico State students chant, “We cannot afford the fees; this is not democracy,” outside of Kendall Hall on Monday (May 7) in protest of three fees (student health services, “student learning” and athletics) that collectively will amount to an increase of $190 per semester by spring 2019. More than 60 percent of students voted against each fee increase in a recent advisory measure. “[President] Gayle Hutchinson is making the sole decisions on this campus for the students, without any care for what we have to say, and that’s just an injustice,” said sophomore Brigitte Dahrouj (center, with “Greedy Gayle” sign). “Especially when she gets to make $300,000 a year and we all have to take out several thousands of dollars of student loan debt.”
