Fat-cat surplus

Butte Humane Society is making a creative attempt to reduce its cat population during a “cat weight-loss adopt-a-thon” held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.

With a nod toward the popular weight-loss show on NBC, the shelter is hoping to become the “Biggest Loser of Cats,” according to a press release. Each cat’s weight will be subtracted from the cumulative cat weight total on display in the cat adoption center’s lobby. The adoption fee will be $25 for adult cats and $55 for kittens, with a reduction of $1 for each pound the cat weighs.

In other BHS news, in the 11 months since the shelter’s Spay and Neuter Clinic opened, it has altered more than 3,000 cats and dogs. Taking potential offspring into account, the clinic estimates it has prevented the birth of about 12,000 unwanted animals. For more about BHS, see related story.
