Pyramid Farms raises funds for the needy

Want to eat healthfully and at the same time support a really worthy cause? Head to the Chico Saturday Farmers Market on Nov. 21.

For the second year in a row, Matthew Martin of Pyramid Farms is donating the proceeds from that day’s sales to Heifer International—a nonprofit organization seeking to end world hunger by providing the poor with sustainable sources of food (livestock) rather than short-term relief. The money will pay for livestock, such as ducks, geese, chickens, goats, pigs and sheep.

“I feel [Heifer] is a wonderful program because it helps eliminate poverty by helping people help themselves,” Martin told the CN&R.

By purchasing produce from Martin (pictured), consumers will be helping raise 28 families from throughout the world out of poverty. Pyramid Farms specializes in delicious organics, and Martin says he’ll be offering a great variety of veggies: orange cauliflower, romanesco, broccoli, beets, garlic, butternut squash, and his famous sweet carrots. Yum.

Martin noted that one of the great things about Heifer is that recipients of the livestock are required to give the offspring—and knowledge—to another person in their community. For more information about Heifer International, visit www.heifer.org.
