Famous mourning ape dies

Ape dies due to unknown causes two years after achieving fame

The gorilla that became famous in 2008 for mourning and carrying around its dead baby for several days has died.

The 12-year-old gorilla, Gana, had been sick for several weeks before her trainer found her dead in her cage recently in her home at a German zoo. Her exact cause of death has yet to be determined, according to The Associated Press.

Gana became globally famous in 2008 for cradling and guarding the body of her 3-month-old baby, Claudio, for several days after the infant creature died from a severe intestinal infection. At the time, zookeepers said the behavior was not uncommon for gorillas, but the public still was captivated by Gana’s mourning.
