Don’t just sit there
Tips for moving more at work—and fighting obesity
It’s backed up by science: Sitting around makes you fat. A recently published study on the sedentary behavior of U.S. adults, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), estimated that people are inactive for more than half (55 percent) of their waking hours. Further, the study found that men who are nearly always sedentary are more than twice as likely to be obese—defined by both waist circumference and body fat percentage. One solution is moving more, especially while you’re at work. So get to it:
• Park your car farther away from the office or, better yet, walk or bike there.
• Take the stairs. Twice.
• Stand up while you’re on the phone; maybe even pace around.
• Leave your chair and talk with your colleagues face-to-face rather than using email, or shouting.
