Don’t just sit there!

Sedentary lifestyles are bad for your health

A recent study looked at the exercise habits of a group of men and women age 60 and older who averaged sitting nine hours a day. For each additional daily hour of sitting, the odds of becoming disabled rose by about 50 percent. The report says that sitting for an extended period may cause muscles to burn less fat and blood to flow more sluggishly, which can lead to a host of health problems. To help offset these problems, the study suggests standing while talking on the phone, parking the car in a far-away spot when shopping, walking rather than driving and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
