Ditch your ride
Political leaders, environmental groups and others around the globe are preparing for World Car Free Day Saturday (Sept. 22), an annual day in which drivers are asked to travel sans autos.
Launched in September 2000 by what’s now known as the World Carfree Network, Car Free Day has been celebrated by more than 1,500 cities in 40 countries, including the United States.
Many participating cities close streets to vehicular traffic in favor of biking demonstrations, games and other activities. The point of the event is to show residents what their city would be like with fewer cars. The Chico City Council will recognize the day with a proclamation and encourage residents to leave their cars in the driveway.
