Bunk mates

We don’t always agree that the “bunk” former City Manager Fred Davis chooses to “debunk” on his blog, “Debunking the Bunk” (www.norcalblogs.com), is actually bunk, which is to say nonsense, but we always like his blunt style.

We do agree, however, with his notion, brought up in a recent posting, that the use of the term “councilor” to describe a member of the Chico City Council is wrong. He notes that “for some unknown reason the local media (several years ago) started to call our City Council Members councilors.” The correct title for the people serving on the council, he continues, is “City Council Member or councilman or councilwoman.” He then refers readers to the City Charter, wherein those terms are used.

Not all the local media made the switch, however. The CN&R has stayed with “councilmember"—and “councilman” and “councilwoman,” too. Chalk it up to tradition. Besides, those are the correct terms. The way we see it, if Chicoans wish to call their councilmembers “councilors,” they should change the charter.

Thanks for debunking that bit of bunk, Fred.
