Back in town
Eddie K again brings his high-energy rhymes to Chico
Eddie K. is pumped right now. No matter what he is doing—working, recording, washing laundry, brushing his teeth or throwing away junk mail—it is reasonable to assume the San Francisco street rapper is doing it with more flair and energy then anyone else on the block.
My evidence is the unbridled vigor and exuberance Eddie K has demonstrated at the numerous shows he’s played in the living rooms and back yards of Chico, as well as on the miniscule stages of our town’s finest performance venues. With microphone in hand, he’s prone to unleash a rapid-fire battle-ready delivery akin to a young Kool G. Rap.
Eddie K. (who also goes by the moniker 88) is the MC of the famed DJ crew the Bullet Proof Space Travelers. It’s an association that has provided ample opportunity to hone his skills on stage and in the studio backed by some of the most influential hip-hop DJs in the Bay Area.
His latest 12-inch single, titled “Bulletproof"s Back,” is produced by Space Traveler DJ Quest. It is a throwback to the minimalist funk and electro sounds that they came up listening to in the 80’s. Eddie K highlights the beats with furious verses about living, partying and rhyming in San Francisco.
The Bay Area rap scene is finally getting some notoriety courtesy of an article in Newsweek and a recently aired Spike Lee movie depicting San Francisco’s rap culture. With the spotlight shining on the scene, Eddie K. remains busy with recording projects. Fortunately, he is taking some time away to make the three-hour trip to his home away from home.
On the turntables will be DJ Quest, and I wouldn’t be surprised if those in attendance get caught up in the duo’s whirlwind, yelling along with every chorus.
