Arts DEVOté
ART IN THE MACHINE Ask and Arts DEVOté shall receive. Thank you, faithful readers, for responding to the call and sending in your art site links. Now A.D. doesn’t even have to leave the house to do his column! Your efforts are commendable.
www.amourica.com First into the inbox was a link to local graphic designer/artist Faizal Nazaruddin’s T-shirt art. Comics-style designs include a cartoon image of horror fiction hero H.P. Lovecraft (as shown) surrounded by tentacles, and a nun with flames shooting out of her head. Great stuff. Perfect for Christmas gifts (hint, hint). Prices range from $20 to $28 (depending on shirt style).
www.tilepile.net Another tile queen in Chico?! Shut up! Last column, A.D. talked about local tile star Robin Indar, and this week the attention turns to another rock piler, and “all around good girl,” Christen Derr. Derr’s site includes a Flickr image gallery of her tile works (including a couple of downtown Chico bench projects, and the glorious “Sun Face” as shown), plus info on her online and print design skills.http://TheatreDate.com Don’t be fooled. This is not an online pick-up bar for thespians. TheatreDate.com is quite simply a list of dates with the performances and auditions of every theater in Chico, Paradise and Oroville attached to them (plus links to the presenting theater). It’s clean and comprehensive, and would be a perfect one-stop shopping destination if the ability to purchase tickets to every performance was included (instead of having to follow links). Maybe A.C.T. (Alliance of Chico Theaters) could team up with it and help bring the whole production together?!
www.10spotmag.com As an arts columnist, A.D. has been remiss in not mentioning the introduction of the very handsome quarterly arts magazine 10 Spot (as in No. 10 art town in America) to the Chico art scene. The brainchild of former CN&R News Editor Josh Indar, the first issue came out in September (download the pdf from 10spotmag.com) to coincide with Artoberfest, and issue No. 2 is set to pop on Dec. 11.
Pool or pond : Another couple of local Web sites, both created as online companions for the CN&R’s upcoming art walk series (beginning Sat., Dec. 2), are just being born. The first, www.chicoartwalk.com (an offshoot of 10 Spot), is a devilishly well-timed response to the announcement of the new series.
The second site, www.artfirstsaturday.com, is coming soon, and it’s named after the monthly event’s proper title. So, it’s got that going for it. Which is nice.
