Animal-free meat?

Researchers in the Netherlands are conducting experiments to create meat by growing it in laboratories, thereby eliminating the need to raise, transport and slaughter animals.

The scientists are working with pork during the early stages of the study.

Meanwhile, NASA-funded scientists here in the United States, looking for ways to feed astronauts on extended space missions, have the same idea and are conducting similar studies.

The research has a long way to go before it leads to an edible product. One of the Dutch scientists told Reuters he had succeeded only in growing thin layers of cells.
