Amphibians and Reptiles of Bidwell Park
This slender, information-packed volume introduces the reader to the wide variety of snakes, lizards, turtles, salamanders, frogs and toads that can be encountered while exploring Bidwell Park. Besides a succinct general overview of each group represented, author Jackson Shedd provides detailed descriptions of each park-specific species, including where and when one is most likely to encounter them, what they eat, and when they breed and produce young. Especially helpful are the author’s full-color illustrations, as well as his line drawings detailing various physical characteristics. A glossary of zoological terms is also provided for those of us not already aware that aestivation refers to “a state of inactivity during dry and/or hot periods (i.e. summer hibernation),” or that a crepuscular creature is one that is “active at dusk and/or dawn.” A great gift for the budding herpetologist or scientifically inclined nature lover.
