America’s top green concern

Air and water pollution greatest environmental issue for U.S. adults

In the eyes of Americans, climate change is no longer the biggest environmental problem facing the planet, a poll finds.

A Washington Post-Stanford University survey asked 804 American adults what they considered the greatest threat to the global environment, according to SFGate.com. The poll found 29 percent of Americans perceived air and water pollution to be the No. 1 environmental issue. Just 18 percent felt climate change was the most pressing environmental concern, compared to 33 percent in 2007. However, 78 percent of participants felt global warming would become a serious problem if left alone and 55 percent said the U.S. government should do “a great deal” or “quite a bit” to curb potential effects.

Only 18 percent said the government is doing enough to find a feasible solution for climate change.
