Chico subdivision shines

Local builder Shastan Homes is looking to the sun when it comes to its latest community project in Chico.

Each of the 58 homes in the company’s forthcoming subdivision off of Glenwood Avenue will come equipped with solar-power systems. The 2.46-kilowatt systems will feature all-black panels mounted on top of the roofing tiles (as shown in this photo from another community). Manufactured and installed by SunPower Corp., the systems are expected to save homeowners at least 50 percent based on the cost of conventionally powered homes.

Other sustainable features will include Energy Star appliances, cabinetry and carpet with little or no volatile organic compounds, tankless water heaters, and special energy-saving windows.
