Squat and squashed

Doughnut peaches

It sounds like the perfect marriage: sweet, fresh doughnuts with fragrant, warm peach filling. The reality, though, is both more healthful and less indulgent. Doughnut peaches earn their name from their flattened shape. They’re also known as hat, squashed, UFO or peento peaches. The aromatic fruits are less fuzzy than other varieties and often white fleshed, the best being the low-acid beauties known as Saturn peaches. Chinese farmers introduced them to the U.S. in the 19th century, but frost-resistant strains have brought new popularity.
