GOP blames Dems for pregnant cow killing

I’m not a PETA person. And I certainly don’t think the state Dems or GOP ought to be taken too seriously, ever.

But I’ve got to call bullshit on this press release from the California Republican Party last week, titled “Let’s get Mooooving on State Budget. How many more cows must die before Dems act?

The statement tries to use the sad story of the pregnant dairy cow who got shot and killed at the California State Fair to score political points against the majority Democrats. I think it’s supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. You tell me:

“Obviously, the stress of state budget uncertainty is taking its toll on these dedicated state employees, from fair management, to state fair police, to the U.C. Davis veterinary director who had to make the fatal decision to tragically down this pregnant cow and her unborn calf. We’re not second guessing the call. Considering the circumstances, it may have been the best decision. But it’s not fair to force people to make life-and death decisions when they’re also coping with the prospect of fewer vacation days or reduced office supplies.

“With the state budget nearly a month overdue, the Democrat legislative leaders are happy to hang out in their own corral, unable to agree even among themselves how to close the state budget gap. This is inexcusable. This is bull. This is a new low for Democrats.

“Is nothing sacred to them anymore, not even cows?”

OK, Republicans, I get that this is supposed to be funny—I think. But what’s the punch line again? A pregnant cow ran amok and had to be put down because the state budget was late? State employees can’t make good judgment calls because they lack office supplies? Did you guys really make a pun with the word low, as in “to moo”?

What is kind of amusing is just how terrible this thing is. Sorry, California GOP, I’m not sure who told you this would be a good idea, but they definitely steered you wrong.
