Over the Hedge
A conniving raccoon (voice by Bruce Willis) dupes a motley crew of forest creatures into helping him steal junk food from a new housing development. Doesn’t exactly sound like Bambi, does it? Generally, the more the makers of an animated feature talk about all the star voices they have, the worse the movie is. Considering how much directors Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick have been bragging about Willis, Garry Shandling, Steve Carell, William Shatner, Allison Janney, Thomas Haden Church, et al., this one should be a real stinker—but it’s not. The story is no grabber, and the sight gags are labored, but the animation is sleekly pretty, and it goes by painlessly enough. As for the big-name cast, only Carell (as a hyperactive squirrel) does a character voice; for the rest, it’s a game of spot the star.
